Chief Nursing Officer


Full-time, Permanent, Salary, Benefited position

On-call required & weekends.  

Position Summary:

Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) organizes and administers outstanding Patient Care Services in all Nursing areas to attain the hospital’s objectives established by the governing authority. Responsible for planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating the delivery of quality patient care within established regulatory guidelines and professional nursing practice standards.

The CNO develops, interprets, and maintains organization policies, budgets, and personnel; assumes responsibility for safe and proper operation and quality control of equipment, techniques, and procedures; and analyzes and evaluates activities to assure quality patient care. Provides leadership in nursing issues in conjunction with the hospital administrative team and in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations.

The CNO is held accountable for following the policies and procedures of the department and organization. Additionally, the position serves as a role model for ethical behavior and promotes an awareness and understanding of positive ethical and moral principles consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Standards of Behavior of Chadron Community Hospital and Health Services.

This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital and directly supervises the following departments (service areas may change as needed):

  • Nursing: Medical/Surgical, Obstetrics, Nursery, Emergency Room, Intensive Care Area, Chemotherapy,
  • Surgery, Outpatient, Diabetic Education, Rural Health Clinics/Specialty Clinics, Clinical Informatics
  •  Respiratory Therapy
  • Social Work/Discharge Planning: Skilled Care

Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and empathy towards patients, as well as excellent communication skills, critical thinking skills, the ability to handle stressful situations, the capacity to function independently, have varied clinical experience and the ability to document meticulously
  • Must have excellent process improvement skills and able to understand Hospital functions and department interactions
  • Knowledge of operations of multispecialty providers
  • Familiar with and able to deploy quality and performance improvement approaches: e.g., project management tools, etc.
  • Maintains professional affiliations and enhances professional development to keep current in the latest healthcare trends and developments.
  • Maintains knowledge and assure compliance with Hospital policies and procedures including, but not limited to, HIPAA, corporate compliance, accreditation and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • High level user of standard business computer systems and software including Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word and other business support resources, e.g., email, calendar, scan, fax, etc.
  • High degree of initiative, judgment, discretion and decision-making, and ability to analyze situations accurately and take effective action as needed.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of managers, regulators, payers, contractors, vendors, customers, etc.
  • Management skills, including the ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, accounts receivable and reserve analysis, pro forma preparation.
  • Skill in identifying and resolving issues/problems, including financial performance
  • Ability to prepare professional level reports and present effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively.
  • Ability to be a high level contributor to teams, committees and task forces and demonstrate a collegial and respectable affect in all work and relationships.
  • Ability to manage and supervise various positions and relate well to people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, as well as have a passion for working with at-risk, culturally diverse populations.
  • Basic understanding of information technology and ability to organize, analyze and synthesize complex data from various sources.
  • Read and interpret financial statements, develop and nurture vendor relationships for purchasing optimization.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours in order to meet the Hospital’s needs/demands

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  • Education:   
    • Graduate of accredited school of nursing and current licensure by Nebraska as a registered professional nurse. BSN required/MSN preferred.
  • Licensure:                   
    • Current RN license in state of Nebraska without restrictions.
  • Experience:                
    •  Experience in the budgeting process and management techniques is essential. Should have a minimum of five years prior experience in Patient Care Services management.  Should be able to demonstrate leadership, managerial ability, good interpersonal relationships and the application of sound administrative principles.  Membership in professional organizations encouraged.
  • Certification Requirement:
    • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS/ENPC, NRP & TNCC with recertification.
