How to Stay Connected with Loved ones in Senior Living during Covid-19

As we all continue to navigate the COVID-19 environment it is important to note that this reality can be especially challenging for families who have a loved one in a senior living community.

Elderly people and those with preexisting conditions are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19.  That said, we also know that building and maintaining close connections and regular interactions with family and friends is also critical to the overall health and well-being of our loved ones.

Prairie Pines Lodge remain committed to helping our residents have a positive experiences and meaningful days amid the pandemic.  Those experiences take on a different form during these challenging times.

There are still many ways for loved ones to stay in touch with residents at PPL.  We have iPads available for residents to have facilitated video chats between residents and with their loved ones.  Besides video chats and phone conversations, there are plenty of ways to stay in touch with your family.:

  • Write letters and cards.  our residents love receiving mail.  Handwritten letters and cards come with a special personality that can't be replicated in emails and texts.
  • Adopt a pen pal within our facility.  Being pen pals with a resident or a group of residents can be a fun, educational and inspiring experience for both you and the resident.  Call Prairie Pines Lodge and ask to speak with the activities director to arrange the specifics.
  • Drop off or mail food or care packages.  This is a meaningful way to brighten your loved one's day, whether through activities such as books and craft kits, or a delicious batch of their favorite cookies.  If you choose to drop off, you will need to leave your delivery outside, with a team member.  You can call ahead to make arrangements for drop off.
  • Make family videos.  Reach out to family members across the country and ask them to send you messages to your loved one.  Then compile the clips into a short video for your family member to enjoy.  Make them lighthearted and fun.  For example, have the kids or grandkids read jokes or perform dance moves.  Anything that makes you laugh will likely make them laugh too.

Please be assured that the health and safety of our residents and team members remain our number one priority.  It's more vital than ever that we work together to show senior friends and family that we care.  Prairie Pines Lodge staff can be reached by calling 308-432-4305.
