Chadron, NE — Chadron Hospital announced today that it will discontinue Dialysis services following a comprehensive evaluation of the program’s long-term sustainability. This difficult decision reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to preserving sustainable healthcare for the region.
“After careful and thorough review, we have determined that continuing Dialysis services is no longer financially or operationally sustainable,” according to Jon Reiners, Chadron Hospital’s CEO. “This decision was not made lightly, but it is necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of our organization’s ability to deliver on our mission to provide excellence in healthcare to the region.”
Rural hospitals across the country are facing mounting challenges, including persistent staffing shortages, rising operational and supply costs, and declining reimbursement. Despite lengthy and extensive efforts to maintain Dialysis services, these factors have made it increasingly difficult to continue the program without jeopardizing other critical services.
By making this difficult transition, Chadron Hospital will be better positioned to preserve and strengthen services for the greatest number of patients. The decision also allows the hospital to continue investing in staffing, technology, and infrastructure that support safe, high-quality care across the organization.
Hospital leadership recognizes the impact this change will have on patients and families who rely on dialysis care, and is working closely with patients, physicians, and regional dialysis providers to coordinate care and facilitate referrals with the goal of minimizing disruption to treatment
The hospital also expressed appreciation for the dedicated employees in the Dialysis Department. Impacted staff are being supported through this transition, and the leadership team is working to ensure that all staff have an option to maintain employment at Chadron Hospital.
“As a community-based hospital, we believe in being open and honest about the challenges we face,” Reiners said. “Making difficult decisions today helps protect access to healthcare for the entire region tomorrow. Hospital leadership will continue to responsibly evaluate services to ensure the organization remains strong and viable well into the future.”
